I had never cried so much in all my twenty-two years of life. The pain I felt when Valentin looked at me with wounded eyes will haunt me forever if he doesn’t come back to me. Where I saw love was replaced with sadness and pain, and I don’t know how to reach inside of him and pull him back from the perpetual darkness he’s in.

He didn’t just come into my life and turn it upside down to walk out and never be heard from again. He’s so strong, confident, and beautiful. He chose me, and in return, I chose him back. We have to move past the huge misunderstanding that has left us both miserable. He came for me tonight, rescuing me once again. He’s probably beating himself up over something no one could have controlled when you’re faced with an uncontrollable circumstance. Those two guys wouldn’t take no for an answer, and had he not been there, I could have been in grave danger.

It happens all the time to unwary girls just looking for a good time with their friends, never knowing the danger that surrounds them. When I was in college, a guy slipping the date-rape drug into a girl’s drink seemed to become the norm at parties. Most girls never said anything, because they never remembered being violated. Did they say no in their minds but had no power to stop the physical assault? It’s disgusting, and it could have happened to me tonight. I was shocked to see Valentin but was never scared of him.

All these thoughts were making my head hurt, still swimming in alcohol. One false move, and I feared I would vomit all over the new leather in Ollie’s backseat. I must have fallen asleep, not hearing the car come to a stop nor the door opening. I rubbed the fog out of my eyes and saw Ollie with his hand outreached for me to take.

“Come on, you’re home.” He smiled, and then I looked around to my surroundings.

“This is not where I live, Ollie. This is Valentin’s home.”

“No, my sweet girl. It became your home the minute he made you his. You belong here with him, the man you love and who loves you back with all that he has. He’s been lost without you, and you are the only one that can bring him back.”

I took his hand as he helped me out of the car and into the building. My ankle was sore and needed some ice to bring down the swelling. He wrapped his arm around my waist and lent the support I needed to get inside of Valentin’s apartment. I don’t know his role in Valentin’s life or what he does for him, but I don’t care. He obviously cares for him a great deal and knowing what I do about Valentin, he wouldn’t trust just anyone with me.

“Okay, I want you to keep this ankle elevated for at least twenty minutes. Keep the ice pack on it.
